Every time I walk by these in the store I need them they’re so yummy! My favorite variety is Funky Chunky Pretzel (the first), but don’t stop there. Find these Edina-made treats at Lunds, Byerly’s, also Kowalskis, and you’ve got an excellent gift for that someone with everything.

Local, organic, award winning, also comes in a gorgeous bottle. For the friends or sisters who love to combine a wonderful  drink, attempt Prairie Organic Vodka or Gin. Available at Surdyk’s. For those guys in your lifetime, look at a pair of classic Red Wing Boots. Adam’s grandpa always had a pair of these classic boots, and Adam and I went searching for a pair a couple of short years back. The store is man paradise  — very remarkable and tactile — and we couldn’t be pleased with his buy. The boots also have worn beautifully and like every wonderful leather product, are much more beautiful now than when they were brand new.

Indulgent doesn’t have to mean expensive — it might mean giving her permission to take some time to get himself  and sneak in a nap. This linen fox sleeping mask is really adorable, and can be handmade by StitchLab at St. Paul. (And just $16.)

The L.O.L. Surprise! Must be the worst holiday gift ever : TreeHugger

The toy, using its 50 layers of plastic, was made to replicate the YouTube unboxing video adventure — because that’s exactly what every young kid needs, right?

If you thought Hatchimals were a waste of cash Christmas, wait till you hear this vacation season’s top-selling toy. The “L.O.L. Surprise! Large Surprise” (yes, it has two ‘openings’ on its own name because we’re talking about the ‘mega limited edition’ version) is a chunk which measures 32 cm (12.5 in) across and contains 50 smaller chunks inside, full of tiny plastic dolls and their clothes, sneakers, and accessories. Some of the chunks are plastic, although others are bath bombs which discharge their toys in the tub.

“After all is said and done, it is just like a bunch of Polly Pockets communes exploded in your living room… [and] also to your living room being coated with enough plastic to block a landfill your tub is going to be trashed too. Merry f***ing Christmas.”

Apparently the 70 L.O.L. Surprise! (I am just going to call it that) is about many a kid’s Christmas wishlist, along with its maker, MGA, states it is currently the top-selling toy in the United Kingdom. There can be a few disappointed kids, though, since Walmart, Target, Kmart, and Toys R Us are all sold out everywhere, but Scary Mommy says you can nab you for $700 on Amazon (phew!)) .

MGA, however, might have run into a snag using a the latest UK mother’s Facebook post, shared more than 7,000 times. Ciara Umar purchased a L.O.L. Surprise! For her daughter was unimpressed: “I’d definately [sic] not suggest it if you do not wish to waste your cash the pic on the right is all you get just pre warning yas.” Umar went to further detail using the Manchester Evening News:

“I was mortified when I saw the stuff. Don’t get me wrong, she was on the moon starting them and had five bathrooms together with the bath bombs, but just went back into her iPad. The novelty wore off within 15 minutes. . .It’s not even a complete ball either, it is just half a ball as the back is flat.”

Some parents have been criticizing Umar, saying they would spend the money just to place a smile on their kid’s face. Comments like that make me groan inside. A grin is a fantastic item, yes, but should it come in any price tag? In the the price of wasted dollars on a crappy toy which generates absurd amounts of non-recyclable plastic? No. There comes a point where parents are fully eligible to draw the line and say, “Sorry, kid, but also your desire for instant gratification must be overridden by ecological considerations.”

Then there is the troubling inspiration for the L.O.L. Surprise! MGA made it because of the growing popularity of YouTube unboxing movies and wished to recreate that addictive experience for kids. What a victory for culture! Except that some kids are seeing unboxing videos of this L.O.L. Surprise! And discovering their own experience less exciting since they already understand what’s inside. Who would have guessed?

Issac Larian, founder and leader of MGA, informed Mercury News, “Seriously, we were seeing these videos anyplace and thought, why not just bring an unboxing toy to these kids?”

Thus, the whole intent of this toy is to recreate the thrill of the chase, the excitement which comes with opening something new. The toy itself isn’t the end goal here in reality, the plastic dolls and chunks sound impressively awful. This ‘toy’ is all about educating our kids to be model consumers from a young age, to search for the interest of shopping, to get them hooked on the delight of new things.

I can think of a couple things I’d prefer for my kids this Christmas — you understand, meaningful gifts, gifts with respect and lasting attractiveness, gifts which don’t spell ecological destruction with each coating that comes off. And I don’t think I am a lousy parent for those criteria.

There’s not anything wrong or unloving about utilizing gift-giving as a chance to speak with kids about what’s acceptable and what’s not from a consumption standpoint. The parents who abandon the L.O.L. Surprise! On the shelf this festival period, the more inclined we — the folks who do not want to be defined as consumers — will have the last laugh.

Hidden in the Senate Tax Bill: Surprise Gifts for Start-Ups and Breweries

Along with the Senate amendment, released on Tuesday by Senator Orrin Hatch, who heads the finance committee, comprised a sprinkling of carve-outs for interest groups big and small.

Among those who stand to gain are tech businesses, who successfully pushed for changes on the treatment of stock options, that are greatly used by start-ups to compensate employees and investors. The Senate amendment introduced Tuesday eliminated a provision from the first bill that would have taxed employee stock options upon vesting, instead of when they are “exercised” or even cashed-in. Tech companies including Uber and Airbnb signed a letter asserting the provision was unjust to start-ups and their employees, since stock options are basically paper wealth, not real money, and shouldn’t be taxed until they’re exercised.

Did the business successfully lobby for the provision to be eliminated from the House and Senate bills, it also acquired a proactive success from the Senate bill, which currently includes language sought by the business giving more flexibility for training stock options, permitting employees seven years to pay tax obligations instead of having to pay taxes to the fair-market value of their shares at the time that they had been exercised.

That was “a nice improvement,” said Evan Engstrom, the executive manager of a startup advocacy group called Engine, that created and circulated the correspondence signed by Uber, Airbnb and over 600 tech firms opposing the initial stock option language.

Mr. Engstrom said he believed the lobbying had an impact, despite the time period for transferring the bill.

“It didn’t foreclose the possibility of calling together,” he said. He added, however, “This was a tiny scramble, because we didn’t actually have a lot of visibility”

Smaller trade groups have been particularly strained by the rapid rate, lobbyists working to the issue said. Such groups have fewer experts to quickly analyze complex legislative language, fewer lobbyists to try and change provisions that adversely affect their associates and smaller budgets to get flying in associates to plead their cases right.

“The speed issues really make it tough to educate and mobilize our membership about the nuance with this, whenever there are a whole lot of high-profile issues being discussed in the press,” said Ian McTiernan, manager of national relations for the American Institute of Architects, that has told House and Senate Republicans their invoices contain three provisions which could needlessly hurt the 90,000 architects represented by the institution, as shown by a correspondence it sent to members of the Senate Finance Committee on Tuesday. It singled out provisions rolling tax credits for rehabilitating historic buildings and making energy efficient improvements to commercial buildings, and the explicit exclusion of architectural businesses from tax breaks extended to additional small pass-through businesses.

Lobbyists for more influential interest groups state their bandwidth has been stretched by additional problems gaining legislative grip at exactly the exact same time as taxation reform. The compressed time period isn’t the only motive that strong industry groups have been less able to form the argument than in 1986, the last time Congress overhauled the tax code. Since then, well-financed ideological advocacy groups are becoming bigger players in legislative discussions, including a raft of conservative groups who have lobbied hard to eliminate many business specific workouts.

Some business groups have won changes in the invoices.

The Senate amendment comprised clear victories to the Brewers Association, such as a temporary decline in the excise tax levied on beer. The “CRAFT beverage modernization” provision, released by Senator Rob Portman of Ohio, would diminish the tax rate on beer made in the United States, particularly for smaller breweries. The amendment will lower the tax on beer to $16 per barrel on the initial six million barrels brewed and lower it to $3.50 per barrel for smaller brewers over the first 60,000 barrels made domestically.

Some citrus farmers also obtained a tax break for those expenses of replanting after disasters. Flooding victims across the Mississippi River Delta may decide to take some early disbursements in their tax-advantaged retirement account without penalty.
